What is Comp AI?

Short answer

Comp AI is a fully open source compliance platform, licensed AGPLv3, that raised a $2.6M pre seed in August 2025. It is aimed at budget conscious teams and first audits. Because the source is open, you can inspect exactly how it collects and stores evidence, which is a genuine transparency advantage in a category where that is usually opaque. It is early, and being open source does not replace auditor diligence.

What it is for

01

You can read how it works

Open source means the evidence collection path is inspectable rather than asserted. In a category where every vendor claims the same things, being able to check is unusual and worth something.

02

Aimed squarely at first audits

Positioned for budget conscious teams and startup first audits, which is the segment most poorly served by the premium platforms.

03

No licence lock on the code

AGPLv3 carries obligations if you modify and distribute it, but it also means you are not locked out of your own compliance tooling by a commercial decision.

04

It does not issue your report

Same as every platform here. A licensed independent auditor issues your SOC 2. Open source improves what you can verify, not who signs.

Who it suits

A good fit if

  • Budget is the binding constraint on a first audit
  • Your team is technical and values being able to inspect the tooling
  • One framework, standard systems, no enterprise buyer reading your trust page
  • You are comfortable being early with a young company

A poor fit if

  • You need a vendor with years of audit firm familiarity
  • Several frameworks are coming soon
  • Procurement requires a mature vendor with references at your scale
  • Nobody there wants to evaluate a young product on its merits
What open source does and does not settle

It lets you verify how evidence is gathered, which is more than any closed platform offers. It does not make the platform mature, does not give your auditor familiarity with it, and does not change the fact that an independent licensed auditor issues your report. Ask your audit firm whether they have worked with it before you commit.

Common questions

Is Comp AI legitimate for SOC 2?

It is a real, fully open source platform with funding behind it and no known controversy as of this review. But no platform issues a SOC 2. A licensed independent auditor does. What matters is whether that auditor is accredited and independent and whether the evidence holds up to their review.

What does AGPLv3 mean for us?

For most companies using it as a service, very little. The obligations bite if you modify the software and distribute or offer it to others. Have someone read the licence if you plan to fork it.

Should we pick this over Vanta or Drata?

Only if budget genuinely binds and your programme is simple. The incumbents carry audit firm familiarity that a young platform cannot, and that familiarity saves real time at evidence review.
