Finish or Switch? The Honest Fork

Should you finish your current platform, or switch?

If the platform was never fully implemented, finish — that's the answer for most people who land on this page. Switching a stalled program usually re-stalls it on the new platform, because the stall's causes (no owner, no sequence, no deadline) migrate with you at full fidelity while your data and money don't. Switch only when you can point at a blocker that is verifiably the platform: an integration your stack needs that it doesn't have, a framework roadmap it handles badly, or pricing that genuinely no longer fits your size.

Worth saying plainly, since we're a migration advisory: "don't migrate — finish" is the most common thing we tell stalled platform customers. Signals you should finish what you have

  • The platform was never fully implemented. If most integrations were never connected and policies were never published, you have no real evidence about platform fit — you have evidence of a stall. Frustration with an unimplemented tool is frustration with the implementation, wearing the tool's logo.
  • Nobody owned it. If "get us compliant" was never one named person's actual responsibility, that — not the software — is the thing that failed. It will fail identically on Vanta, Drata, Secureframe, or anything else.
  • The platform covers your stack. Five minutes against the integration catalog: if your cloud, identity provider, HR system, and code hosting all have native connectors, the platform can do the job. Everything after that is execution.
  • You're at one framework, maybe two. A first SOC 2 (even SOC 2 plus ISO 27001) is squarely inside every major platform's comfort zone. Platform ceilings are real, but they're not what's blocking a first report.

Signals you should genuinely switch

  • Verified integration gaps for your actual stack. You used the platform in earnest, needed connectors it doesn't offer, and the workarounds are ongoing manual labor. Verifiable, specific, and a legitimate migration driver — this is the cleanest switch signal there is.
  • A real feature ceiling, hit while actually using it. Custom controls the platform can't model, evidence workflows it can't represent, API access locked behind a tier jump that changes the math (Drata's Foundation/Advanced split is the classic example). Note the tense: hit, not feared.
  • Pricing or packaging misfit for your size. You bought at 30 people, you're 150 now (or the reverse), and the renewal quote reflects a tier structure that no longer matches your shape. Run the renewal math first — but yes, sometimes the answer is a platform built for your current size.
  • A multi-framework roadmap the platform handles badly. If year two genuinely holds ISO 27001 plus HIPAA plus a customer demanding FedRAMP-adjacent answers, cross-framework mapping quality starts to matter, and the platforms differ more here than at one framework. This is a real reason — verify it against your written roadmap, not a hypothetical one.

The misdiagnosis warning

Here's the trap this page exists to name: a stall feels like platform failure from the inside. "We've had Vanta for a year and we're still not compliant" sounds like an indictment of Vanta, and vendors competing with your current platform will happily agree with the sentiment. But if the implementation never happened, the sentence describes a stall — and a migration is the most expensive possible way to avoid admitting that. You'll spend weeks reconnecting integrations and re-mapping controls to arrive at the same red dashboard with a different logo, having converted the finish-line budget into switching costs. The problem travels with you unless the problem was genuinely the platform.

The test that cuts through it: write down what specifically blocked you, then check each item against "would this blocker exist on the other platform?" Missing connector for your HRIS — real, verifiable, doesn't travel. No one had hours to review access findings — travels at full strength. Most stalled buyers' honest lists are dominated by the second kind.
