How Long Does a GRC Platform Migration Actually Take?

The honest answer: 3–14 weeks depending on complexity. Here's what drives the timeline and how to know which bracket you're in.

When security and compliance teams ask how long a GRC platform migration takes, they usually get one of two unhelpful answers: vendor sales teams who say “we’ve seen it done in a few days” (for a simple program, by a sophisticated team, with everything going right), or consultants who say “it depends” without explaining on what.

Here’s a more honest answer: most migrations take between 3 and 14 weeks from kick-off to decommissioning the source platform. The wide range is real, and understanding where you fall matters.

The three complexity tiers

Simple (3–4 weeks): One active framework, under 50 employees, at least 6 months before your next audit or renewal, and most of your evidence stored as uploaded files rather than URL links. A small integration stack (under 10 integrations). One person owns the migration and has bandwidth to dedicate roughly 25–30% of their time to it.

Moderate (5–8 weeks): Two active frameworks, 50–200 employees, 3–6 months before your next audit, some URL-linked evidence. A typical integration stack of 10–20 integrations. The migration point person is doing this alongside other responsibilities.

Complex (10–14 weeks): Three or more active frameworks, 200+ employees, under 3 months before your next audit, significant portions of evidence stored as URL links, a large integration stack (20+ integrations), and/or API-based integrations built on the source platform that need to be rebuilt.

The four factors that extend timelines most

Multiple active frameworks. Each framework requires its own control mapping exercise in the destination platform. Cross-framework mappings that worked automatically in your source platform don’t transfer — they need to be re-established. Two frameworks roughly doubles the control mapping effort; three or more is not linear.

Evidence stored as URL links. Uploaded evidence files can be downloaded from the source platform and re-uploaded to the destination. URL-linked evidence has nothing to carry — each piece of link-based evidence must be individually re-submitted and re-associated to the correct control. For programs where 30–50% of evidence is link-based, this step alone can add 1–2 weeks to the migration timeline.

Audit proximity. The closer you are to your next audit, the more carefully each migration step needs to be validated before proceeding. You can’t afford to discover a significant evidence gap 4 weeks before audit. Proximity to audit typically adds conservatism (and time) to every phase.

Large integration count. Each integration must be reconnected from scratch. Large stacks (20+ integrations) include a long tail of less-common integrations that take longer to set up, require more troubleshooting, and may surface configuration issues specific to your environment. After reconnection, there’s a mandatory 24–48 hour stabilization window before you can meaningfully assess test results.

The phases of a migration

Phase 1: Preparation (1–2 weeks) Export everything from the source platform. Document your integration list. Audit your evidence storage format. Notify your auditor. Sign the destination platform contract and request import templates from your CSM.

Phase 2: Platform setup and integration (1–3 weeks) Complete onboarding in the destination platform. Reconnect all integrations. Wait for the 24–48 hour stabilization window. If migrating to Vanta, complete the device agent rollout — budget extra time for organizations over 50 employees.

Phase 3: Data migration (1–4 weeks) Map controls to the destination platform’s framework. Upload policies. Import vendor and personnel records via CSV. Re-upload evidence files and associate to controls. This is the most variable phase — evidence volume and the file vs. link breakdown drive the timeline range.

Phase 4: Validation and stabilization (1–2 weeks) Review all test results. Remediate legitimate findings. Confirm evidence coverage is complete. Get auditor confirmation that the transition is documented.

Phase 5: Decommission (a few days) Settle outstanding fees with the source platform. Archive data. Confirm account closure process and timeline.

What can be parallelized vs. what must be sequential

Some migration steps can run in parallel; others have hard dependencies.

Can be parallelized: Integration reconnection and control mapping (you don’t need integrations set up before you start mapping controls). Policy upload and vendor record import. Evidence re-upload for different frameworks.

Must be sequential: Integration reconnection must happen before the stabilization window, which must happen before you can meaningfully review test results. The Vanta device agent rollout must be complete before device-level tests can run. Source platform export must happen before you begin decommissioning.
